Roads, schools and military installations remain closed and flight schedules impacted Friday as Colorado Springs remains in a winter storm warning.

With snow continuing Friday and a forecast for more, all school districts in the Colorado Springs have called off classes today.

Numerous highways are shut down, including both directions of U.S. 24 from Colorado Springs to Limon and Colorado 94 both directions from the El Paso County line to the U.S. 40/287 junction. Also, Interstate 25 southbound from Pueblo to the New Mexico state line remains closed.

6 p.m. Friday

The Colorado Springs Airport reported 6 flight delays and 43 cancellations as of 6 p.m. Friday, according to media spokesperson Aidan Ryan.

There were 485 flights canceled and 798 delayed at Denver International Airport, according to FlightAware, as of 6:30 p.m. Friday.

5 p.m. Friday

National Weather Service posted on social media with warnings of heavy and blowing snow as winds continue to pick up into the evening. Visibility has been reduced to 1/4 mile or less in some areas and road conditions are “rapidly deteriorating.”

4 p.m. Friday

Snowfall accumulation has exceeded 15 inches in some areas of Colorado Springs as snow continues to dump across the region. Click or tap here for up to date snowfall totals across the state according to the National Weather Service.

Snow is expected to intensify over the next few hours. Colorado State Patrol urges travelers to use caution during rush hour and to check out road closures before leaving, as many major roads have been impacted this afternoon. Flurries will continue into the morning.

Starting at 4:00 p.m., commercial motor vehicles will be not be allowed on southbound I-25 south of exit 194 due to lack of parking and resources between the Denver area and Colorado Springs. Drivers are urged to remain in Denver metro area, Colorado State Patrol posted on social media.

These restrictions follow the recent CDOT announcement that trailers and towed vehicles will not be permitted on I-70 west of Golden starting at 4 p.m.

2 p.m. Friday

The Switchbacks have opted to move the Western Conference Semifinals to Sunday with kickoff at 4:30 p.m. due to inclement weather. Those who have already purchased tickets should see the new date updated soon.

Nighttime snowplow crews responded at noon, focusing on primary and secondary routes. Crews will also be focused on the streets in the downtown area in preparation for Saturday’s Parade, which is still on, but the start time has been pushed back to noon.

The Colorado Springs Airport reported 3 flight delays and 39 cancellations as of 2:45 p.m. Friday, according to media spokesperson Aidan Ryan. Airport officials urge those planning to fly Friday to check for delays ahead of arriving to the airport. Crews are currently on 24-hour shifts plowing snow from runways, as is typical through any major snow event.

Increasing winds are of concern for the National Weather Service in Pueblo. There is a high likelihood for gusts higher than 35 mph Friday afternoon into early Saturday morning.

Colorado State Patrol announced commercial motor vehicles and towed vehicles will be prohibited from travel between 4 p.m. Friday to 8 a.m. Saturday on several major mountain roads due to worsening conditions. Interstate 25 in both directions from south Castle Rock to Colorado Springs made the list.

12:45 p.m. Friday

The Colorado Department of Transportation has rescheduled the temporary closure for Bandley Drive to Tuesday Nov. 12 due to the weather.

Crews will install a drainage pipe across the roadway beginning on Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 7 a.m. until Wednesday, Nov. 13, at 5 p.m. Businesses in the area will be open and will have local access to Bandley Drive. All businesses along Bandley Drive will have access from Mesa Ridge Parkway.

The following detours will be in place during this time:

• Northbound traffic will travel south to Santa Fe Avenue (U.S. 85/87), travel north to Mesa Ridge Parkway, and turn west to Bandley Drive.
• Southbound traffic will travel north to Mesa Ridge Parkway, travel east to Santa Fe Avenue (U.S. 85/87), and travel south to Bandley Drive.

10:40 a.m. Friday

The city of Colorado Springs announced that the Veterans Day parade’s start time has been delayed by one hour from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Saturday due to the weather.

10:20 a.m. Friday

The Colorado Department of Transporation announced they will begin restricting any type of trailer from traveling west of Exit 259 from 4 p.m. Friday until 8 a.m. Saturday in advance of treacherous conditions along I-70 near and west of Golden.

The restriction is designed to reduce the chances of semi-truck and other impactful spinouts that would require extensive resources to clear and cause prolonged road closures.

Additional roads coming out of the Denver Metro area into the higher elevations will be under similar restrictions. These roads include U.S. 6, U.S. 40 and U.S. 285 in Jefferson County and I-25 over Monument Hill.

Additional Colorado highways with restrictions include:

• US 285 in both directions from Mile Point 250 (Morrison) to 184 (Fairplay)

• US 40 in both directions from Mile Point 234 (Winter Park) to 256 (Empire)

• US 6 in both directions from Mile Point 217 (Keystone) to 229 (Georgetown)

• I-25 in both directions from Mile Point 180 (South of Plum Creek Pkwy) to 150 (N. Academy Blvd)

10:15 a.m. Friday

The city of Manitou Springs announced that administrative, elected administrative offices and facilities upgraded to a full closure for Friday. City offices will reopen Tuesday for normal business hours due to Veterans Day. The closure also applies to non-mission essential personnel.

10 a.m. Friday

The Colorado Department of Transportation announced that the road closures currently in place are likely to remain into Saturday. Drivers are urged to avoid travelling east of I-25 and from south of I-76 to the New Mexico and Kansas state lines.

“The storm may look like it is leaving later this afternoon, but the next round is expected to be worse than what we have already seen,” said CDOT director of maintenance and operations John Lorme. “Drivers should be prepared for long-term closures and should avoid driving in the most impacted areas of the state for the duration of the storm.”

9:15 a.m. Friday

9 a.m. Friday

The city of Colorado Springs announced that all administrative Offices, including the Colorado Springs Municipal Court, will be closed Friday due to winter weather conditions.

Mountain Metropolitan Transit has canceled bus and Metro Mobility ADA Paratransit service for Friday.

The Mountain Metro Customer Service Lobby and Transit Administration building will be closed, but customer service representatives are still available at 719-385-7433 or at transitinfo@coloradosprings.gov. between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Several city parks are closed to vehicle traffic, including Garden of the Gods, North Cheyenne Cañon and Palmer Park. Trails are open, but officials advise people to avoid hiking on the roads.

Emergency responders and essential city personnel will work normal schedules.

El Paso County administrative, elected administrative offices and affiliated agencies are also closed due to inclement weather conditions. Exceptions include mission-essential personnel and the El Paso County Clerk and Recorder’s Office election staff, election judges and essential supporting department personnel.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office will remain fully operational to ensure public safety, fulfill scheduled appointments and respond to needs for service, officials said in a news release.

The closure applies to non-mission essential personnel and includes:

• 4th Judicial District Attorney’s Office
• Clerk & Recorder’s Office Departments of Motor Vehicle, Recording, and Clerk to the Board

• El Paso County Treasurer & Public Trustee’s Office
• El Paso County Coroner’s Office
• Pikes Peak Workforce Center

The Public Works Operations & Maintenance Division is continuing to clear primary and secondary routes as the snow continues to fall. Drivers should plan extra time to safely reach their destination and use caution around working snowplows, allow plenty of room to pass, and maintain a safe distance as crews have limited visibility.

8 a.m. Friday

Our potent ‘Albuquerque Low’ brings its final round of snow to the Pikes Peak region Friday. Winter storm warning in effect until 5 a.m. Saturday.

“As the low tracks northeast toward the southeast corner of Colorado, upslope flow will ramp up dramatically,” Meteorologist Casey Dorn with Gazette news partner KOAA said. “This potent wet airflow combined with strong mid-level energy in our atmosphere will bring heavy snow to all of southern Colorado.”

Snow will begin mid to late morning, increasing in intensity during the day.

“Snow intensity will vary as it did yesterday, with periods of heavier snow and periods of light to moderate snow,” Dorn said.

It’ll be windy too with gusts of 25-35 mph possible, particularly during the afternoon and evening hours.

“This will lead to pockets of blowing snow and low visibility,” Dorn said. “Higher wind gusts are likely over the Palmer Divide where I see the potential for a few 40 mph wind gusts during the late afternoon into the evening. Temperatures will be slightly warmer today…by a couple of degrees.”

Skies will gradually clear through the day Saturday with a chance for some sunshine in the afternoon as temperatures reach the upper 30s to low 40s.

Interstate 25 southbound is closed from Pueblo to the New Mexico border, and Mountain Metro buses have stopped service.

Polis verbally declared a disaster emergency due to severe weather that’s expected in parts of the state, and has authorized unarmed Colorado National Guard members to provide winter storm response support, according to a press release from the governor’s office. Read more about the declaration here.
