The man who was fatally shot after a fight escalated near a youth football game on the south side of Colorado Springs on Saturday has been identified as Donte Rice.

Just before 2:30 p.m., Colorado Springs police responded to a shooting in the 1600 block of South Murray Boulevard.

Police said the shooting happened in a parking lot near where the youth football game was being held. Initial reports by police stated that there was a verbal altercation in the parking lot between two adult males, and during that disturbance one of the men produced a handgun and fired at the other man, striking him at least one time.

Rice, 29, was dead when police arrived on scene. The homicide unit responded to the scene and has assumed responsibility for the investigation, according to a news release Tuesday.

Police said the shooting appears to not be related to the football game or the school, Atlas Prep, where the teams were playing.

According to prior Gazette reporting, a Facebook post shared to the school page, penned by Atlas Schools CEO Brittney Stroh, said that the shooting happened during an activity that was not affiliated with the school.

The post said that the school rents out its sports fields and facilities to external groups on the weekends.

“While this took place on Atlas’s grounds, neither Atlas nor any of its students were involved or affected. Our condolences go out to the family and friends affected by this tragedy,” the post read.

In a statement provided to KOAA, school officials said the shooting happened near one of the school’s buildings, and that Pop Warner teams were using the field at the time.

The website for Pikes Peak Pop Warner Youth Football and Cheer shows that several youth league football games were scheduled to be played at the Atlas Prep fields on Saturday between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.

At this time, no suspects are in custody, police said.
