Man fatally shot after fight escalates at youth football game in south Colorado Springs

Police are searching for the person who fatally shot a man after a fight at a youth football game escalated Saturday.

The call came in from the 1600 block of South Murray Boulevard near East Fountain Boulevard, at the Atlas Prep School campus, shortly before 2:30 p.m., according to a sergeant at the Sand Creek substation.

According to the Colorado Springs police blotter, investigators initially found that there was a verbal altercation in the parking lot between two men. One of the men pulled out a handgun and fired on the other man, striking him at least one time.

The wounded man died on the scene, according to police.

“Detectives are attempting to identify the suspect, but he is not in custody,” states the blotter.

A Facebook post shared to the school page, penned by Atlas Schools CEO Brittney Stroh, said that the shooting happened on school grounds, during an activity that was not affiliated with the school.

The post explained that the school rents out its sports fields and facilities to external groups on the weekends. On Saturday, during one of the games hosted by the groups, a fight escalated and one person was killed.

“While this took place on Atlas’s grounds, neither Atlas nor any of its students were involved or affected. Our condolences go out to the family and friends affected by this tragedy,” the post read.

In a statement provided to KOAA reporter Maggie Bryan, school officials said the shooting happened near one of the schools’ buildings, and that Pop Warner was using the field at the time.

The website for Pikes Peak Pop Warner Youth Football and Cheer shows that several youth league football games were scheduled to be played at the Atlas Prep fields on Saturday between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Southbound lanes of Murray Boulevard were closed from Center Park, and northbound lanes were closed at Merchant Court while police investigated the shooting.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Colorado Springs Police Department at 719-444-7000, or Crime Stoppers at 719-634-STOP.
