Second defendant in gruesome Colorado Springs kidnapping pleads guilty

A second defendant facing kidnapping-related allegations pleaded guilty on Monday and is set to receive a two-decade sentence to the Department of Corrections.

Joshua Pleasant is one of several individuals facing charges after the group allegedly kidnapped and assaulted a couple at a Colorado Springs apartment complex for reporting one of the defendants’ boyfriend, Shemor Mitchell, to the police.

Mitchell has been identified by The Gazette as a suspect in the alleged attempted murder of a 22-year-old man at the “PopCycle” Bridge on Jan. 22.

A detective testified in court that the group released one of the victims to play a game of “manhunt” and allegedly told the victim he got a one-hour headstart to try to escape but that she would kill him if she caught him.

Detectives additionally testified that both victims of the kidnapping were brutally beaten with fists, baseball bats, glass bottles and the handles of firearms.

Pleasant pleaded guilty Monday at a hearing to one count of first-degree assault and a violent crime sentence enhancement, making him the second to plead guilty in connection to this case.

In January, Joseary Arizmendi pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree kidnapping and the same day was sentenced to 20 years to the Department of Corrections.

Pleasant is expected to receive the same 20-year sentence , but his sentencing date is scheduled for May 12. His prior trial date of April 22 has been vacated.

Also appearing in court on Monday was Melissa Martinez, one of the co-defendants in the case who has yet to enter a plea. Her court appearance was brief; Martinez’s new attorney accepted the case and requested a review hearing for June.

Co-defendants Linda Guest and Kathy Arbuckle also have yet to enter a plea in the case. According to previous Gazette reporting Guest was undergoing a court-ordered competency evaluation, but court records show the mental health stay on Guest’s case was lifted last month.

Both Arbuckle and Guest will return to court on April 14 for an arraignment hearing.

All five defendants were arrested on 17 charges in connection to the incident, including first-degree kidnapping, witness and victim intimidation, first-degree assault, robbery and several violent crime sentence enhancements.

Martinez additionally faces a second open assault case in El Paso County, where she is charged with sexual assault and second-degree assault.

All five defendants remain in custody and have not posted a bond to be released, according to court records. Guest and Arbuckle are both in custody on no-bond holds, according to court records.

Mitchell remains in custody at the El Paso County jail on a total bond of just over $1.5 million between three cases. He will next appear in court on April 14 for an arraignment hearing in his attempted homicide case.
