Urban Egg not all it’s cracked up to be | Dining Review

The cheerful, welcoming greetings by each staff member we encountered en route to our table at Urban Egg seemed like a good omen of what was to come; unfortunately, not everything that followed was as bright.

The Menu

Urban Egg was mostly all about breakfast with a smaller number of brunch items. Otherwise, eggs were the main attraction, with pancakes sharing some spotlight. From Benedicts to omelets, from pancake flights to breakfast burritos and more, there’s a lot from which to choose.

The large laminated menu highlighted breakfast and alcoholic beverages on one side, with salads, sandwiches and non-alcoholic drinks on the other. An impressive number of healthy options were available.

Critic’s Tip

Choose your sides carefully. Not all are prepared equally. Also, patience here will be a virtue. It took a few hand waves and stare-downs to get someone to refill coffee cups.

Biscuits and gravy with hash browns and an egg over-easy (The Gazette: Cody Van Hooser)

On the Table

Four types of pancakes, which are identified as “Fancy Pancakes,” are offered with options for a single or a flight of three. The varieties include cinnamon swirl, blueberry streusel, lemon ricotta and strawberry cheesecake.

The traditional flight includes three of the same kind, while the gourmet flight extends to a choice of three.

We chose the blueberry streusel flight ($15) with a side of sausage ($5.25). The good news was that the cakes were fluffy and not just topped with blueberry syrup, but were filled with a substantial amount of berries. All that made the crumble topping barely noticeable.

The sausage was the drawback. The plate arrived with two patties, one of which was hidden beneath the picture perfect one. The one underneath was overcooked and misshaped. Unfortunately, once the food arrived, our server only checked back when we were nearly through with our meal. At that point there was no use sending the unpalatable patty back to the kitchen. Given the cost, this was particularly disappointing.

Biscuits and gravy ($15) were a treat. The former were house-made, flakey and didn’t get soggy under the weight of the sage-infused gravy with plenty of (expertly prepared) bits of sausage. Two eggs and hash browns were part of the dish.

Again, the sides were a failure. The eggs were rubbery and the spuds were permeated with so much black pepper they were too spicy to enjoy.

The Venue

This is a well-lit, clean, comfortable spot for brunch. Large photos of fresh fruit adorn the pastel-colored walls and the north-facing wall of windows provided plenty of natural lighting. The exterior view was of the large patio and parking lot.

The restaurant can easily accommodate large groups. The place wasn’t full the morning of our visit, but we noticed families, couples, foursomes and a few singles.

Afterthoughts

My dining companion and I both enjoyed the main elements of our meals; the letdown surfaced with the sides. If service had been more attentive, I believe our discontent could have been easily addressed and the entire meal would have been a success. Alas, it wasn’t meant to be — at least not this visit.

Urban Egg has several locations in town and elsewhere. My experience at two of its other sites was always positive.
