Mimi’s Cafe shutters doors in north Colorado Springs

Mimi’s Cafe has closed its last Colorado Springs location.

The restaurant located at 7133 N. Academy Blvd., just north of the intersection with Woodmen Road on the city’s north side, was locked late on Wednesday afternoon, during otherwise normal operating hours. A sign taped to the inside of the front doors notified customers the location is now closed.

“Thank you for your loyalty. We’ll miss seeing you around our tables, and hope to see you at another Mimi’s soon,” the sign read in part, directing customers to the company website.

It was unclear what factors contributed to Mimi’s permanent closure.

Officials with the Dallas-based company did not immediately return The Gazette’s request for more information on Thursday morning.

Local news station KRDO reported in early February the restaurant was temporarily shut down after failing a health inspection and incurring 25 violations such as spoiled beans left in the cooler and “heavily soiled” floors and walls.

In the summer of 2019, Mimi’s closed another location near Powers Boulevard and South Carefree Circle, at the First & Main Town Center retail complex on the city’s east side.

There are no other locations in Colorado, according to a list on the company’s website. Mimi’s has 41 restaurants in nine states: Arizona, California, Florida, Missouri, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio and Tennessee.

The French-style bistro was founded in 1978, opening in Anaheim, Calif. It rebranded to Mimi’s Bistro + Bakery in July 2019. It serves American and French-style café fare including quiches, omelets, crepes, soups, salads, sandwiches and burgers. It’s well-known for its bakery items baked daily, like muffins and croissants.

Mimi’s is the latest of several restaurants that have shuttered their doors across town in recent weeks.

Texas-based On the Border Mexican Grill & Cantina also permanently closed its last remaining Springs locations at 5832 Barnes Road on the city’s east side and in the Broadmoor Towne Center. Several Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop locations near downtown, up north and on the east side have closed. Wendy’s and Sonic Drive-In have also shuttered multiple locations in the greater Springs area over the last year.

Commercial real estate experts told The Gazette earlier this month that despite various business closures, the retail market in the greater Colorado Springs area remains strong but challenged. Residents are being choosier about where and how they spend their money as inflation, tariffs and global conflict drive up retail costs, they said.

Recent business openings include a new Wienerschnitzel location, its third in the Springs area, inside the Walmart Supercenter at 3201 Platte Ave.; a second Shake Shack restaurant at 7465 N. Academy Blvd.; and Front Range Barbecue’s second location at 2220 Academy Place, to name a few.
