When chow fun is on the menu it’s a clue that there’s nothing standard about Dragon King Chinese Kitchen, even though there was also an extensive array of traditional popular dishes available.

The Menu

There are items representing various regions of China including Szechuan, Hunan, Cantonese, other parts of Asia and Western-adapted fusion dishes.

With several protein choices, there was something for everyone. Besides the chow fun, the menu featured several noodle sections including pan fried, lo mein and crispy.

Critic’s Tip

Servings are huge and served family style, but still be prepared to take home leftovers.

On the Table

In an effort to switch from egg rolls and wontons as starters, we opted for barbecue ribs ($6.95). The order included two large pork ribs complete with grill marks on a tangy, caramelized marinade. They were messy to eat and worth the extra napkins needed to look presentable.

Wonton and hot and sour soups ($3.95 each for smalls) were welcome for their warmth and flavor on a cold spring evening. Although neither varied from the usual renditions, they were, nonetheless, well prepared. The hot and sour was not overly spicy and the wonton was well-seasoned.

Seeing chow fun on the menu was a welcome surprise because not all Chinese restaurants have it, but I was glad I had an appetite. My chicken chow fun ($15.95) was a huge serving of chewy rice noodles glossy and slick with a soy sauce-based coating combined with oyster sauce, sesame oil, ginger and garlic. Thin slices of chicken absorbed the sauces while scallions and onions provided an extra savory element to the mix. This was such a large serving that there was enough for dinner the next night.

Pork with scallions ($15.50) was something new and different for us. A substantial amount of mostly stick-shaped pieces of pork with onions and some scallions came with a choice of steamed or fried rice. The latter was the only disappointment of the evening. The menu described it as “plain,” which was an accurate description; bland would also be correct. It had a reddish-orange color that suggests turmeric, but there was such an overall lack of flavor.

The pork, however, was tender and infused with a rich, soy sauce marinade. There were fewer scallions, which were cut lengthwise, than expected. On the plus side, the meat was plentiful.

The Venue

Dragon King Chinese Kitchen is a clean, bright restaurant with comfortable booths and several four-tops that could easily be configured to accommodate larger groups. Asian-inspired artwork adorns the walls. There were two televisions, with the volumes off, one tuned to a news channel and the other to a Spanish-language channel (really!). Music provided background noise but didn’t inhibit the ability to carry on conversations. 

Afterthoughts

Staff was attentive. Water glasses were kept filled, empty plates were quickly removed and orders quickly arrived out of the kitchen. There was a lot of coming and going, thanks to multiple takeout orders, but the dining room also had a steady flow of diners. It seemed many left, like we did, with containers full of leftovers.
