Southern Colorado cities record well-below average precipitation totals for April, warmer weekend ahead

Despite a flurry of late April showers, three southern Colorado cities recorded well-below average precipitation totals for the month.

The much-needed rain and snow this week are riding the coattails for what has, overall, been an extremely dry and blistering hot season with a historically low snowpack that has fire officials on edge.

Colorado Springs saw a total of .66 inches of rain over the past three days, according to data from the National Weather Service’s Pueblo office. The heaviest rain in April occurred Thursday, bringing the month’s total to .93 inches. The monthly average is 1.45.

Pueblo saw much the same, recording a total of .82 inches in April, below its average of 1.57. Alamosa recorded a staggering low of .09 inches, with its average being .57.

Some areas saw more snow than rain this week.

Just north of Colorado Springs, Monument recorded 3 inches Thursday, according to Weather Service snowfall reports. To the northwest, Woodland Park recorded 5.

The largest snow amounts recorded in a community happened around Teller County, which saw 12.5 inches of snow.

What’s to come

The Weather Service reported that heavy, wet snow is expected to continue through Friday afternoon for higher-elevated areas, though the heaviest amounts happened overnight.

Meteorologist Casey Dorn of Gazette news partner KOAA said Friday’s highs in Colorado Springs will reach the mid-50s as it braces for a possible freeze later in the evening.

Dorn and Weather Service meteorologists forecast that temperatures will continue to warm across the region over the weekend, with Saturday being in the mid 60s and Sunday warming into the 70s. The average May temperature in Colorado Springs is 57 degrees.

Come Monday, the chance for scattered showers and storms is back and will continue into Wednesday, according to Dorn.
