Colorado Springs gets rain, with more expected this week

Late April showers and even snow touched down across parts of Colorado on Monday, bringing much-needed rain to the Pikes Peak region

April precipitation totals in Colorado Springs are well-below average for the month, but a meteorologist says that could change by the end of this week.

The Black Forest area and north and northwest sides of Colorado Springs areas saw the most rain, ranging from .83 to .62 of an inch. Most parts on the south side side of the city saw less than a half inch, according to data from the National Weather Service.

Other areas in southern Colorado recorded more rain and even snow. The Weather Service reported Pagosa Springs saw .4 of an inch of rain and 1.5 inches of snow in the last 24 hours. Pueblo saw barely any rain.

On average, April gets 1.45 inches of rain in Colorado Springs and 5.5 inches of snow, according to data from the Weather Service. With only a few days left in the month, the city has recorded .25 of an inches of rain and .1 of an inch of snow amid a historically dry season across the western U.S.

Weather Service Meteorologist Cameron Simcoe said the forecast for this week is showing Colorado Springs could get 1.2-1.5 inches of rain in total.

“With the current explicit forecast, it would technically push us over the monthly average but only barely,” he said. “It’s rain, it’s the weather, so there’s going to be ranges for that.”

More rain is in the forecast throughout the week. In Colorado Springs, the Weather Service expects the most amount of rain to come Thursday, when between a quarter and a half of an inch is forecast with a 90% chance of precipitation.

Meteorologist Alan Rose of Gazette news partner KOAA said Tuesday will be calmer than Monday.

“The latest disturbance to move into Colorado this afternoon will only skirt our area, with a small chance of a shower this afternoon in the Pikes Peak region,” he said. “Most of the rain and snow today will fall in the mountains and northern Colorado.”

Highs Tuesday will warm into the 50s, 60s and lower 70s for the Pikes Peak region. A red flag warning has been issued for the San Luis Valley starting at noon and lasting until 7 p.m.

The Colorado Springs area and southern Colorado have had several wildfires in recent weeks, including this week’s Poitrey Canyon fire in Las Animas County.
