Friendly vibes, decent pub fare at The Point Bar & Grill

The Point Bar & Grill is the kind of place where you wouldn’t be surprised if, after a few visits, staff (and everybody else) knew your name; it’s that friendly and the food’s pretty good, too.

The Menu

Expect pub fare such as burgers, sandwiches and salads, along with a large number of starters. The latter includes wings, nachos, quesadillas and much more. There also are daily specials that focus on comfort food: meatloaf and fried chicken.

Critic’s Tip

Without being rude, sometimes it does pay to eavesdrop. During our visit, someone nearby asked our server if the french fries were still hand cut. They aren’t. Everyone was disappointed.

On the Table

While diners at other tables waited patiently for their fried chicken dinners (the Wednesday special), we indulged in green chili cheese fries ($9.95). These were sloppy with just-right spicy chili full of pieces of tender pork topped with melted cheddar. The fries would have otherwise not been noteworthy. Instead, they held up well to the gooey toppings. All that was missing was a spoon. When we mentioned this to our server, she immediately brought one so we could scoop up every last bit.

I try to avoid nightly specials simply because they’re so limited in their availability. However, the fried chicken special ($15.99) was nearly impossible to ignore; seemingly everyone around us ordered it. Our server said it was the most popular special, with the Friday fish and chips also a top contender.

My order came with mashed potatoes with gravy, coleslaw and three pieces of crispy, bronzed chicken: a drumstick, thigh and breast. The meat wasn’t exactly juicy, but neither was it dry. The dark pieces fared better than the breast, but the crunchy, well-seasoned coating was what I was looking for.

The spuds and gravy were fine, but the addition of cayenne pepper to the slaw was a treat. It was creamy with a subtle, late-to-the-taste buds kick.

The two-fisted barbecue bacon cheeseburger ($11.95) was well-cooked and covered with cheddar and crispy bacon. It arrived with tangy sauce on the side to smear over everything. It was messy, and a napkin wipe was needed after practically every bite.

Disappointing were the onion rings (extra $3.99). Even those tossed frozen from a bag deserve to be well-cooked. These were overcooked, evident not only in their dark brown coloring, but the dried-out texture.

The Venue

The name says it all: Bar & Grill. It’s dark and can be loud, but conversation doesn’t require shouting. The vibe is warm and friendly. Décor relies on varied sports paraphernalia, including surfboards, several TVs and an electronic jukebox.

Seating is at the bar, of course: booths, high tops and a few low tops.

Afterthoughts

This is first and foremost a bar, which is reflected in the menu. Don’t expect anything fancy. Still, the food is well prepared, and the servings are plentiful.

Perhaps management will consider returning to hand-cut fries. Homemade onion rings would be nice, too.

The staff was impressively efficient and attentive. It’s definitely worth a visit for one of the daily specials: maybe on a Friday for fish and chips.
