A Colorado Springs man who suffered minor burns after a fire engulfed his mobile home Thursday morning was reportedly pulled from the fire by a neighbor, fire officials said.

The blaze started just before 7 a.m. at Aspen Grove Mobile Home Park on Busch Avenue and quickly spread to nearby cars and two other unoccupied mobile homes that sustained minor damage.

The Colorado Springs Fire Department said in a Friday news release the neighbor likely saved the man’s life.

“CSFD extends deepest gratitude and appreciation to the neighbor who jumped into action before help arrived,” the Fire Department said in the release.

Firefighters had the fire under control by 7:30 a.m. The man’s home where the fire originated was considered too unsafe to live in, the Fire Department said.

Fire investigators determined that the fire’s cause was an accident due to “improper use of smoking materials.” The home where the fire originated also did not have smoke alarms.

CSFD offered the following safety tips to prevent fires like this:

• Smoke alarms should be installed on every floor of the home and inside and outside every bedroom.
• Smoke alarms should be checked monthly to ensure they are working properly.
• Never smoke where medical oxygen is used. Medical oxygen can cause materials to ignite and make fires burn hotter and faster than normal.
• Always properly dispose of cigarettes.
• Never smoke inside or near combustibles.

Fire Department spokesperson Ashley Franco said the man who has been displaced will be assisted through a program the department has with Red Cross.
