A dispute during a child custody exchange outside a City Market grocery store in Woodland Park led to a fatal shooting, according to a news release Monday from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
Woodland Park police responded to the 700 block of Gold Hill Place South at about 5:30 p.m. Friday after receiving a 911 call.
Witnesses told investigators that 28-year-old Luis Morales, the biological father of the child, threatened the mother’s boyfriend after a physical altercation between the two in the store’s parking lot. The boyfriend pulled a gun and fired a single shot, striking Morales, according to the CBI.
Morales was transported to a Colorado Springs hospital but later died.
The 29-year-old boyfriend stayed at the scene and has cooperated with officials, according to the CBI, which is leading the investigation. He has been released pending the outcome of the investigation.
