Woodland Park City Market shooting death investigation points to self-defense
The recent shooting death of a man at a Woodland Park City Market grocery store parking lot “appears likely to be a case of self-defense,” according to a news release Tuesday from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
Luis Morales died in the Nov. 29 shooting. According to the CBI investigation and previous Gazette reporting, there was a physical altercation in the parking lot just off U.S. 24 during a child custody exchange between Morales and the boyfriend of the mother’s child.
Witnesses said Morales, 28, threatened the mother’s boyfriend with a knife. The boyfriend, 29, then pulled a gun and fired a single shot that hit Morales.
Woodland Park police arrived and, along with bystanders, gave first aid to Morales before taking him to a Colorado Springs hospital, where he died, according to the release.
The shooter stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators, the CBI said.
By the end of December the CBI expects to forward the case and its findings to the 4th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, which will making a final decision whether to pursue criminal charges.
