LETTERS: It could be worse; appalled by columnist’s conclusions
It could be worse
I am amused to read about the complaints surrounding the Christmas music played in our downtown shopping area. Last year at this time, I was living in Chengdu, China. The shopping district near my apartment also played Christmas music. Embedded in their song loop between “Santa Claus is Coming To Town” and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” was that wonderful, traditional Christmas Carol “She Wore An Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini.”
Just try to get that out of your head. It could be worse.

Column’s arguments very strange
My good friend Barry Fagin recently wrote a very strange article entitled “Plenty of similarities between Trump and Putin” in which he called on all Republicans to “not give Trump the nomination.” Barry even swore “to vote Democratic” if we Republicans would support Donald Trump.
What are his arguments? They are very strange. Barry compares Trump with Putin and the rest of us with a “pack of animals, a herd.” In his reflections, he wonders if “alpha male Trump’s” power as a president would improve the country. Here I expected Barry would explain his doubts to the readers, instead, he opened his Cold War worn-out cliché about terrible Putin who “grabbed the Crimea” and blaming all Russians for their desire to be a “world power again.” In addition, he claimed that Russians in a war zone “do not need any protection,” though in the next sentence confessed that he saw “Russian women in the east of Ukraine rallied down on their knees, and screaming for Putin to save them from the fascist invasion” of Kiev’s punitive expedition.
His strange arguments go on. First, he tells us that “plenty of the American people wished Obama had Putin’s guts.” Barry even predicts that “Trump would act like Putin” and says that “all the polls show Trump’s followers like him because he is tough and can keep America safe.” But next Barry suddenly talks about the odds of dying in a terrorist incident, comparing it with deaths on the roads (!?). The natural concerns of the American people to protect their land from terror he calls a “primitive urge.”
You know, Barry, this article shows your real face: you are a Democrat, and you have to live with this “on your conscience” for the rest of your life.
As for your comparison of Trump and Putin, you are wrong again, my friend. Trump is the American version of Vladimir Zhirinovsky, who acts like a clown. Russians will never elect Zhirinovsky to be their president, but they like him because he tells the bitter truth without being afraid of being politically incorrect.
Trump tells openly the thoughts that are in many American minds.

No religious freedom support
I have waited to reply to The Gazette’s viewpoint on Mikey Weinstein’s ongoing fight with the Air Force Academy. I am so tired of Weinstein and his continuing fight with the academy. As your column stated, the academy and all federal land belongs to all of us, and if I want to kneel down and pray when I am visiting them, I will. This country was based on religious freedom, and Weinstein has no right to try and take that away from me or anyone else.
Praying in the end zone or anywhere else on federal land is not harming anything or anyone.
As long as the academy leaders pay attention to him and scramble to answer his complaints, he will always return with another complaint until God cannot be mentioned on academy grounds at all and even then he won’t be happy.
I would love to know what happened in Weinstein’s life that he hates Christians so much. He seems to be filled with hate and anger. He needs to rename his group because they certainly do not support religious freedom.

Appalled by columnist’s conclusions
Re: Dan K. Thomasson’s opinion piece Dec. 15.
I was appalled by his conclusions. Dan is quick to establish that the whole Republican Party has changed. It is no longer his father or his grandfather’s party. In his case, the apple fell too far from the tree.
His diatribe of grievances with those who affiliate with the Republican Party serves only to identify that the writer is not a member of the GOP but is a shill for the Democrats.
He established that he is for: gun control, illegal immigration, pro-abortion, anti-Christians, a welfare state and higher taxes. He did all of that in one paragraph.
Well, the GOP is not self-destructing. What is happening is that the GOP is being infiltrated by some progressives and RINOs. There is no test before registering party affiliation. It will be up to the voters to open their eyes and ears then vote for the one who represents them, the party and will best serve the nation.
Dan, like the rest of the mainstream media, can’t find the guts to write about the Democrat contenders. If he could, he would write about the party that has a socialist and two progressives, one who is being investigated for crimes against the country and all who are determined to destroy the republic. All three are advocating for open borders and a welfare state.
With an eighteen trillion dollar debt, their greatest concern is “the biggest threat to the nation is climate change.”
No longer can we teach self-reliance, hard work, a two-parent family, a Pledge of Allegiance and pride of country and self. It is time to tighten the belt. Demand that representatives reign in the out of control spending and defend the country. We have a de facto king, and we don’t need a queen.
