EMPTY STOCKING: Silver Key delivers food, friendship

Empty Stocking Fund: Catholic Charities focuses on pathways for families

This is one of a series of stories about the nonprofit agencies that receive money from The Gazette/El Pomar Foundation Empty Stocking Fund campaign that runs through the holidays.

Twice a week, Silver Key Senior Services delivers Meals on Wheels to Bill and Barbara in eastern El Paso County, something he says is more than just food on the table.

“Sure, the food’s real good,” says Bill, who asked that his last name not be used, “but we’ve gotten to know the folks who bring the food out. They’re always real helpful. They visit with us and I feel we’ve gotten to know them real well.”

The route in Calhan and Peyton is relatively new for Silver Key, which provides a range of services throughout the region to the elderly. Assistance includes companionship, home improvements, meals, transportation and more.

“They called us,” he says. “They were trying to set up a (Meals on Wheels) route out here and wanted to know if we would do it. We said fine. I’d heard of Silver Key but we didn’t think we needed it. It seems like we got old overnight and they’ve been a big help.”

Bill explained that Barbara has several health issues, but the couple is able to live independently. Meals on Wheels is the only Silver Key service they rely on, but Bill says he has no reservations about recommending it to friends.

“They have some pretty good meals,” Bill adds. “We like their food a lot. It sure is a lot easier to put the food in the microwave then to make a whole meal. It gives us a good break.”

He says that he has some dietary restrictions, and Silver Key takes note.

“My wife and I are 56 years in love,” Bill says. “We do what we can to enjoy life. The food makes things much easier on us. We’re pretty grateful for that.”
