Fitness Diaries: How to find a workout that will last for you

TRX training

Let’s face it: Finding a workout that fits your needs can be overwhelming. There are gym memberships, hundreds of fitness classes, fancy cardio equipment, weight machines and all those exercise DVDs we see in infomercials. Surely, doing some form of exercise is better than nothing, but how do we know if it is something we will stick to and see results from?

This is the time you need to challenge yourself and take a chance. The problem most people have with working out is that it’s exactly that – work. And who has time to fit more work into an already jammed day of being at work and the everyday chore of taking care of housework.

The key is finding something you will enjoy doing.

As a group fitness instructor, I always encourage people to try a group fitness class. There are classes for all fitness levels. Zumba for those who like to dance away the calories, kickboxing or combat for those who need to punch out their stress, aqua and low-impact classes for those who may have injuries or just want to start moving, toning or pump classes for those who want to focus on strength, yoga or Pilates for those who want to focus on core strength and flexibility. And the list goes on. Try one or two classes a week. Jot down the class time in your calendar and set the reminder so you can get used to making it part of your weekly routine.

If working out in a group setting makes you cringe, give personal training a try. When most people hear “personal training,” they think expensive, expensive. You must think of it as an investment in your health. When you meet with a trainer, that person will assess your fitness abilities and talk about how they will help you reach your wellness goals. Personal trainers are not there to shout and bark at you while you try to do one pushup. The workout is tailored just for you and your fitness level. You will learn how to properly use the gym equipment and learn how to do each exercise properly and safe. Plus, you will get advice on your calorie intake. Scheduling a weekly session with a personal trainer is a good way to kick-start your workout routine. And it is something you will stick to because no one likes to disappoint their trainer.

If paying for a personal trainer falls completely out of your budget, grab the person sitting next to you and plan an evening walk or a bike ride. If you’re feeling really ambitious, try joining a running club. The key is to get out there and take someone with you. More than likely, they need the push to get moving, too. Once you schedule this into your routine, you’ll find that you will keep each other accountable and both will begin to challenge each other to stick with it.
