Airport Road closure: Major upgrades underway for South Academy Boulevard

A portion of Airport Road is closed for the summer as crews continue work on a multimillion-dollar project upgrading parts of South Academy Boulevard for the first time in 55 years.

As of Monday and lasting through the summer, east- and westbound Airport Road is closed west of South Academy as workers complete “various underground utility and intersection improvements,” according to the project website. The closure extends from just west of Lakewood Circle, eastward to South Academy, a project closure map shows.

Project officials have not given an exact date they expect Airport Road to reopen.

Drivers should expect delays and use alternative routes during the closure.

Motorists on Airport Road can detour around the closure by traveling north to Pikes Peak Avenue using Chelton Road or South Academy Boulevard for east and west access.

Drivers on South Academy can head west on Pikes Peak Avenue and then continue south on Chelton to Airport.

All businesses will remain open and accessible throughout the closure. Access from South Academy Boulevard is advised, the project website states.

Part of Boychuck Avenue closes south of Hancock Expressway

Also starting Monday, a portion of Boychuck Avenue, from north of the Lamplighter neighborhood to its south entrance, is closed through Friday between Hancock Expressway and Drennan Road.

Boychuck runs parallel to South Academy Boulevard.

The main entrance into the Lamplighter neighborhood is fully closed. Neighborhood traffic must use the southern entrance.

Motorists who need to access businesses on Boychuck north of the Lamplighter neighborhood can use Hancock Expressway. Travelers can access Boychuck Avenue south of the neighborhood via Drennan Road.

Boychuck Avenue will close again from May 31 through June 7.

The road closures will help crews more quickly install an underground waterline and complete new paving along Boychuck and South Academy, the project website states.

Jet Wing Drive at South Academy closes

Jet Wing Drive at South Academy Boulevard will close on Friday so crews can complete underground work.

The intersection will close for a month, project officials said.

Traffic on Jet Wing Drive must detour north to Hancock Expressway to access South Academy.

The intersection will reopen once underground work moves north.
