A terminally ill inmate at the El Paso County jail has died, according to a Tuesday news release.

The male inmate, whose name was not released, was found unresponsive in the facility’s medical housing unit at about 9:20 p.m. Monday, the release stated. El Paso County Sheriff’s Office deputies and medical staff began lifesaving efforts until Colorado Springs Fire Department personnel arrived and took over, officials said.

Lifesaving efforts ceased at 9:41 p.m., according to the release.

The inmate had been in custody since earlier this year as he awaited sentencing for not complying with probation. He had recently been treated, under round-the-clock security, at a local hospital, officials said.

Sheriff Joe Roybal had been trying to expedite court proceedings so the inmate could begin to receive end-of-life care, but “he passed away before those efforts could come to fruition,” according to the release.

An investigation into the inmate’s death, including an autopsy by the El Paso County Coroner’s Office, were set to follow, though law enforcement officials believe the man died of natural causes.

Monday’s incident was the county jail’s second inmate death in less than a month.

Zacharia Joseph Spriggs, 33, of Colorado Springs, was hospitalized on Sept. 11 after being found unresponsive during a routine welfare check. Evidence found in Spriggs’ cell suggested that he had attempted suicide, officials said. He died four days later.
