The body of a man who went missing at Lake Pueblo State Park was found early morning Friday.

Witnesses reported that the man had flipped off an inflatable without a life jacket and went under water about 30-60 yards from shore around 7 p.m. Thursday, according to a news release from Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

Parks and Wildlife was on scene searching for the man with on-board sonar and underwater drones about 15 minutes later. The CPW marine evidence team recovered the man’s body around 1:30 a.m. Friday.

The water temperatures at the time were in the low 70s.

“CPW offers condolences to the family and friends of the victim, and everyone involved in the incident,” said Becky Buist, operations manager at Lake Pueblo.

There have been at least four deaths at Lake Pueblo since the start of May, according to previous Gazette reporting. Most recently, Daniel Strawn, 44, drowned June 7 while swimming in the lake.

According to unofficial numbers from Parks and Wildlife, there were more than 30 water-related deaths last year, and there have been at least six so far this year. The highest number of water fatalities recorded by the agency was 42 in 2022.
