Motion to limit pretrial publicity denied for woman facing charges related to 2 homicides

Double homicide cases moved to El Paso County, court records reveal detailed timeline

A motion to limit pretrial publicity for the second of two suspects accused of killing two people in southern Colorado last year before fleeing the state was struck down by an El Paso County judge Friday.

Hailey Cole, 43, is facing homicide charges alongside her alleged co-conspirator, Johnny Rankin Morris, 46, for the deaths of Stephen Walker, 37, and Timmy Huston, 65.

Cole appeared for her 4th Judicial District hearing Friday via Webex. She remains in Park County jail with her next appearance in her 11th Judicial District case set for Monday. Court records indicate Cole’s Park County case may be moved down to El Paso County, as Morris’ was earlier this year.

Cole’s defense counsel addressed a “stack” of motions Friday, most of which were denied. The request to limit pretrial publicity, a motion Morris’ defense also unsuccessfully requested, was denied. Judge David Prince said the defense had “no basis” for the motion and no examples of media coverage that may have impacted the case were presented.

The prosecution was quiet during the hearing, with no motions of their own.

A few family members of Walker were present in the courtroom for the relatively short hearing. In the days leading up to the discovery of Walker’s body, friends and family created a public Facebook page to aid in the search for him.

As of Friday, over 900 people have joined the page, which is still active with updates regarding court proceedings for Morris and Cole.

According to previous Gazette reporting, the case started on Dec. 19 when Walker and Morris were reported missing after law enforcement discovered pools of blood at their residence on the 1800 block of Pima Drive in El Paso County just east of Colorado Springs.

After several days, the investigation led officials to a wooded area outside of El Paso County, where Walker’s body was found on Dec. 30. Huston’s body was found Dec. 24 in a nearby residence in Park County.

Morris and Cole were arrested in Pear River County, Miss. on Dec. 30, following a call to area police about an attempted car break-in.

Court records show Morris’ Park County case was closed and moved to the 4th Judicial District earlier this year. His next hearing is set for July 25, and he remains in El Paso County jail on a no-bond hold as of Friday.

Cole’s next appearance in the 4th Judicial District is set for Sept. 12, for a preliminary hearing. The judge said he anticipates the hearing will take up the majority of the day.

Cole remains in Park County jail also on a no-bond hold.
