1350 Distilling, a patriotic-themed craft distillery on the eastern edge of downtown Colorado Springs, is permanently closing its doors on Sunday, it announced this week.

The decision was made “with a heavy heart,” the announcement on Facebook and 1350 Distilling’s website said, though a reason for the closing was not given.

In an interview Friday, though, co-founder Jake Weien said he could blame everything from inflation to changes in the alcohol industry.

“There’re countless variables in owning any sort of business and to pinpoint one thing is difficult,” he said. “We as the owners reached a point where if we were to get to the next level, it would require a large investment. … We weren’t willing to put homes up for collateral.”

Two years ago, Colorado voters narrowly approved a measure allowing grocery stores to sell beer and wine. As a result, dozens of independent liquor stores shut down. A liquor store closing has a ripple effect that hits suppliers and distilleries like 1350 as they’re all part of the supply chain, Weien said.

Furthermore, he said people are wary of a potential recession and that’s forcing them to cut back spending.

Despite the challenges, “This decision was not made lightly,” Weien said in the announcement. “We are incredibly grateful to our loyal customers, employees, and partners who have supported us throughout this journey. Together, we built something special, and we’ll always cherish the memories and relationships made here.”

The business opened in September 2019 and is named for the 13 stripes and 50 stars on the U.S. flag. It includes an upscale cocktail lounge and manufacturing facility for distilling whiskeys, bourbons, vodkas and gins. According to its website, it ships direct-to-consumer in 35 states and Washington D.C.

From the start, 1350 Distilling has worked to give back to the community, Weien said.

“Over our five years of operation, we raised over $20,000 for local nonprofits, and provided thousands of dollars of product in like-kind-donations and services,” Phillip Bragg, a retired Marine and co-founder and head distiller of 1350 Distilling, said in the announcement.

Customers on Facebook were quick to express their dismay over news of the closing.

“So sad to see you guys go,” one post read. “I appreciate your whiskey and your devotion to those who have served.”

“We are very sad to see you go,” another post said. “You did wonderful work by honoring our military and first responders, as well as, your spirits are world-class. We have nothing but respect for your entire organization. We wish you all the very best in your next venture.”

While he said it is too soon to know what’s next, Weien said he’d fall back on his own graphic design roots, adding that everyone at 1350 will be able to fall back on their current or previous professions.

Still, the impending closing stings.

“This is disappointing for us and our supporters, but it’s not the end of the world and another door may open,” he said.
