Air Force standouts Rytis Petraitis, Kellan Boylan enter transfer portal

Two prominent players from Air Force’s 2023-24 team have announced their plans to leave.
Sophomores Rytis Petraitis and Kellan Boylan both entered their names into the transfer portal on Sunday. Petraitis and Boylan are the Falcons’ first players of the 2024 offseason to enter the portal.
Petraitis led Air Force in points (15.7), rebounds (6.3), assists (3.7), steals (1.6) and blocks (0.9) during the 2023-24 season. The sophomore hit the game-winning shot in Air Force’s 78-77 road win over New Mexico, which won the Mountain West Tournament, on Feb. 24. He also logged Air Force’s second triple-double in program history against UNLV on Jan. 23.
Petraitis was similarly key for the Falcons as a freshman. He won Mountain West Freshman of the Week six times and logged 317 points, second most in program history during the Mountain West era.
After only playing six games as a freshman, Boylan started 28 games in 2023-24. Boylan averaged 7.2 points per game and was second on the team with five rebounds per contest.
Boylan tied Air Force’s single-game record for 3-pointers with nine in the Falcons’ 83-72 home loss to Wyoming on Jan. 30.
Petraitis and Boylan’s transfers come after three Falcons — Jake Heidbreder, Jake Murphy and Marcell McCreary — entered the portal following the 2022-23 season. Heidbreder was Air Force’s leading scorer that season and transferred to Clemson.
Players are allowed to be in contact with other programs once their names are in the transfer portal, but players are free to withdraw from it at any time. Air Force student-athletes are allowed to transfer until the beginning of their junior years, per Academy rules.
Following Air Force’s first-round exit to New Mexico in the Mountain West Tournament, coach Joe Scott commented on the possibility of players leaving the program.
“This is one of the best leagues in the country,” the coach said. “If you’re not driven by that, if you’re not fueled by that, then you know what, you can go do something else. I’m trying to compete at the highest level. It doesn’t get much higher than this league.”
