After an absence of more than six years, Las Vegas-based Allegiant Air is resuming service at Colorado Springs Airport with three new routes starting early next year.
The new routes, as outlined in a news release early Tuesday, are service to Phoenix/Mesa via Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, beginning Feb. 12; Santa Ana/Orange County, Calif., via John Wayne Airport, Orange County, beginning Feb. 13; and St. Petersburg/Tampa, Fla., via St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport, beginning Feb. 14.

Flights will be twice weekly for all three routes, Allegiant spokesman Hector Mejia said Tuesday.
The routes to Phoenix will run seasonally, on Thursdays and Saturdays to Santa Ana/Orange County, and on Mondays and Fridays to Tampa/St. Petersburg, Colorado Springs Airport spokeswoman Dana Schield said.
Allegiant ended service to Colorado Springs in spring 2018 after 16 years serving the airport, citing lack of demand; at the time, it operated twice-weekly flights to Las Vegas. Its Colorado Springs schedule had also previously included Phoenix and Long Beach, Calif.
Mejia said demand for the low-fare airline’s services has increased in Colorado Springs in the years since.
“Our dedicated team of network planners constantly analyzes demand and makes strategic decisions about current and past markets to selectively add service,” he said. “Our business model is based on offering affordable, all-nonstop flights to and from cities where leisure travel demand exists. Our network planning team determined that demand for Allegiant’s unique brand of service exists in Colorado Springs.”
Greg Phillips, the city’s aviation director, said he is excited for Allegiant’s return to the local market because it offers low-fare flight options and will add new routes travelers have been asking for.
“We have strong legacy carriers with Southwest, American, Delta and United (airlines), but we haven’t had an ultra-low-cost carrier, a carrier focused on leisure travel. Allegiant brings that to our market,” he said.
The new routes are among 44 new nonstop routes announced Tuesday by Allegiant in what the carrier said ties the record for the largest expansion in company history. Allegiant for the first time will serve Gulf Shores, Ala., and Columbia, S.C. To celebrate the expansion, Allegiant said, it is offering one-way fares on the new routes as low as $39.
“These additions reflect our ongoing commitment to meet customer demand,” Drew Wells, Allegiant’s chief commercial officer, said in Tuesday’s release. “By connecting more cities, we’re making it easier for travelers to visit family and friends, access top leisure destinations, and create new memories.”
Colorado Springs Airport lands first international route
The airline’s return to Colorado Springs is expected to boost the local economy and tourism, representatives from the Colorado Springs Chamber & EDC and VisitCOS said Tuesday.
Arizona, California and Florida are among the top states driving visitation locally, said VisitCOS spokeswoman Alexea Veneracion.
“Having more route options directly to those areas is going to be really good economically for us,” she said.
Dani Bolling, senior vice president of marketing, communications and sales at the Chamber & EDC, said Allegiant’s new routes from Colorado Springs will make the city and region more attractive for business and leisure tourism.
“We can attract more business conferences, meaning more hotel room nights, people dining at our restaurants and supporting small businesses that make and add the character to Colorado Springs and El Paso County,” Bolling said.
Phillips said people traveling between Colorado Springs and Southern California were Colorado Springs Airport’s largest unserved market before now. Nearly 600 people a day travel from the larger Colorado Springs area to the Los Angeles Basin, he said.
“We think these are home runs from Allegiant Airlines,” he said of the new routes. “We think these are great options, and we’re confident that it will be good for our community. … You want to see the airport grow? Use the airport, because that’s what the airlines see and that’s what helps us continue to grow,” he said.
Allegiant Airlines on Tuesday also announced two new routes from Denver International Airport beginning May 22: to Idaho Falls, Idaho, via Idaho Falls Regional Airport; and Stockton, Calif., via Stockton Metropolitan Airport.
