Avelo Airlines pauses service at the Colorado Springs Airport, but plans to resume

Avelo Airlines, a low-fare carrier that launched nonstop air service in May 2023 between Colorado Springs and the Los Angeles area, is taking a seasonal break.

The airline last week paused its twice-weekly, nonstop flights from the Colorado Springs Airport to the Hollywood-Burbank Airport just outside Los Angeles, but plans to resume the service in May, Madison Jones, an Avelo spokeswoman, said via email.

The Springs-to-Burbank route had been flying Thursdays and Sundays, with a Tuesday route added over Thanksgiving, she said.

“Demand during winter tends to be significantly lower than summer months,” Jones said. “We are actively exploring dates in May to return service.”

The temporary suspension is just that, and Avelo has no plans to cease service at the Colorado Springs Airport, she said.

“We were very encouraged by the customer (demand) for this route last summer, which makes us optimistic that we’ll see healthy demand again this summer,” Jones said.

She added: “We’re actively working on our West Coast flight schedules for the spring.”

Avelo paused its service in Colorado Springs effective Jan. 7, said Dana Schield, a Colorado Springs Airport spokeswoman.

Such temporary breaks or changes in service are routine as airlines regularly evaluate their service and routes, she said.

“Airlines make changes all the time, whether it’s adjusting their frequency or adjusting their peak travel days or they’re adjusting seasonal service,” Schield said. “There’s changes that get made all the time and all the airlines have different strategic approaches to how they do things and how they manage their networks.”

The Los Angeles-area flight launched by Avelo was an important addition at the Colorado Springs Airport because it followed United Airlines’ decision to discontinue its nonstop service to Los Angeles International Airport from the Springs in early 2023.

Southwest Airlines continues to fly nonstop to the nearby Long Beach Airport from Colorado Springs.

Houston-based Avelo was launched in April 2021 and serves about three-dozen destinations in the United States.

The inaugural Avelo Airlines flight from Colorado Springs to the Los Angeles area via the Hollywood-Burbank Airport taxis across the tarmac before takeoff in May 2023.
