The theme of Friday night’s doubleheader at Security Service Field was pretty easy to pick out – the team that used its speed most effectively was rewarded with a win.

In the first game that team was the Sky Sox, with Eric Young Jr. handing his team a pair of runs before Kenny Perez knocked in the game-winner in a 4-3 walk-off win.

In the second game the top of Nashville’s order broke loose, with leadoff man Jason Bourgeois and No. 2 hitter Alcides Escobar combining for four runs in a 5-2 win in front of 7,366 on a Fireworks Friday.

“They got on base and they made some things happen,” Sky Sox manager Stu Cole said. “You’ve got to give them credit, but we just didn’t do anything after the first inning.”

Using their own speed with a leadoff triple from Young, the Sky Sox built a two-run lead in the nightcap but stranded a pair of runners. Colorado Springs managed just three hits the rest of the way as Bourgeois (2-for-4, two runs, RBI and a stolen base) and Escobar (1-for-3, two runs, RBI and a walk) took off.

“We’ve never raced, so I don’t know,” Bourgeois said when asked which of the two is faster. “I’m just kind of a hustler, that’s it. He’s fast. He’s younger, too (Bourgeois is 27, Escobar is 22), so he’s got that. When I was his age I could move, too.”

It’s a safe bet that neither could keep up with Young, who twice scored from third on shallow fly balls to right in the first game.

Young, who scored three times in the doubleheader, is now tied with Clint Barmes for second in Sky Sox single-season history with 104 runs. Phil Hiatt holds the record at 106.

Given that he’s already scored 13 runs in seven August games, Young should blow past that record the way he already blew past the franchise’s stolen-base mark.

Young’s runs helped the Sky Sox claw back from a 3-1 deficit in the opener – the continuation of a game that started on Wednesday but was suspended by rain in the second inning. Matt Miller scored the tying run after a leadoff double in the seventh and scored the game winner in the ninth when Perez’s bouncer up the middle was just out of Escobar’s range at shortstop.

The second game – a seven-inning contest – lacked the drama when Nashville plated three in the third and two more in the fifth to wipe out the Sky Sox early lead.

The teams complete a four-game series at 7:05 p.m. today.
