Return to Nature co-owner to appear in court Thursday

A Return to Nature Funeral Home co-owner is expected to appear in court on Thursday, a week after her husband and fellow co-owner Jon Hallford had his bond reduced to $100,000.

Carie Hallford, one of the two owners of Return to Nature Funeral Home, is scheduled to appear in court Thursday afternoon for her preliminary hearing.

The Hallford family is facing over 200 felony charges stemming from the discovery of 190 improperly stored bodies at a building in Penrose connected to the Return to Nature Funeral Home that the couple ran. The charges include 190 counts of abuse of a corpse, 61 counts of forgery, four counts of theft and money laundering.

At Jon Hallford’s hearing last week 4th Judicial District William Moller granted a motion from the defense to lower Jon Hallford’s bond from $2 million to $100,000, despite objections from the prosecution and the families of victims in attendance.

“I am floored by the ruling today,” Abby Swoveland, who was at the hearing representing her mother, a victim, said to The Gazette after Jon Hallford’s hearing last week. “The trauma to our families, our communities, our first responders, law enforcement — the impact is immeasurable. And yet he will be walking among us. The revictimization continues.”

Carie Hallford currently remains in custody at the El Paso County jail on a $2 million bond ahead of her Thursday preliminary hearing. Court records show Jon Hallford remains in custody despite the lowered bond.

Attorneys may also discuss the possibility of unsealing the arrest affidavits for Jon and Carie Hallford at the Thursday hearing after discussion of the motion to unseal was deferred from Jon Hallford’s hearing last week.
