Palmer boys win own track invitational

Kaitlin Hanenburg of The Classical Academy was a double winner at the windy 15-team Terror Invitational on Saturday at Garry Berry Stadium. For a brief time, Palmer’s Andrew Goodman also thought he won twice.Palmer’s boys won the track team title by 15 points over Windsor, who reversed the order and took the girls’ crown by 13.5 points.”It was a good day for us,”  Palmer coach Nancy Pellow said “We had a little snow, a little rain, a little wind, a little sun. It was a typical spring day in Colorado.”Hanenburg broke the tape in the 800 and 1,600-meter races. Goodman did the same, but was disqualified in the 800 for veering wide on the final turn and impeding eventual winner Joe Kappes of Rock Canyon.”Andrew’s a great runner,” Pellow said. “He’s a great kid, too. He wouldn’t have done it if he knew the rule. It’s OK. He’ll have a lot more opportunities.”Goodman, a sophomore, said, “I’ve seen people do it and had no idea it was against the rules. Off the curve, I started taking out, bending out and making him run farther.”I’m definitely disappointed. But it’s not like it was a great time anyway so it’s a good race to learn from.”Goodman was a second ahead of Kappes (2:04.53) but still 3 seconds shy of his personal best. Goodman (4:34.92) won by nearly 9 seconds in the 1,600.Hanenburg coasted in the 1,600 (5:23.15) and ran hard in the 800 (2:22.57), but was dismayed by her time in difficult conditions. Hanenburg has pre-qualified for state in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 plus the 1,600 and 3,200 relays.”She can summon something from inside when she needs to,”  Titans coach Alan Versaw said. “Not many can do that.”Hanenburg, a junior, is a two-time state cross country champion and has claimed multiple titles in track.”I expected to win, but sometimes you’re competing against the clock,” Hanenburg said without a trace of arrogance. “I was hoping for a better time, but it was very windy.”Palmer’s other individual winners were Maurice Blackledge (long jump), Brendan Jackson (110 hurdles) and Reginald Allison (triple jump) for the boys and Sam Strempke (400 meters) and Jaimee Cichowitz (pole vault) for the girls.Nick Bennett of Evangelical Christian Academy won the 400, while Ellicott senior Cody Johnson prevailed in the high jump.
