Nothing got lost in translation for the Fountain Valley boys’ soccer team Tuesday.

Kurt Roock headed in a corner kick from fellow exchange student Ricky Creel to lift the Danes to a 2-1 overtime win over host James Irwin in the second round of the Class 3A state playoffs.

With time winding down in the first extra period and darkness threatening, Creel, a senior from Chihuahua, Mexico, sent a high kick into the middle of the box, where a James Irwin defender headed the ball to the turf near the left side of the goal before Roock knocked it in off the bounce.

Roock, a sophomore from Hamburg, Germany, and Creel assisted on the Danes’ first goal, which also came off a corner kick.

Coach Steve Kerchner, whose team lost to James Irwin twice in the regular season, said the Danes had changed the way they do corner kicks in preparation for this game.

“We wanted to push them hard into the corners and make them play out of the back because we thought that they were weak back there, and we got the corner,” Kerchner said. “Corners are everything in soccer. In the overtime, you can get a corner, you can make things happen. And that’s exactly what they did.”

The eighth-seeded Jaguars, feeling a sense of urgency, had been attacking relentlessly late in the second half and finally struck on a set piece with 6 minutes remaining as David Groves’ direct kick found the foot of a sliding Daniel Cameron to tie the score.

“I just took it really fast because they weren’t really set up,” Groves, a senior, said. “I kind of looked up and saw him moving.”

The Danes (9-6-2) took a 1-0 lead with 3 minutes left in the opening half when Roock flicked Creel’s low corner kick toward the goal and Logan Ford finished.

“Both defenses played great,” Groves said. “All three goals were on set pieces, so nobody could score off just the regular plays.”

The ninth-seeded Danes, who advanced to the state semifinals last year, move on to the state quarterfinals, where they will play top seed Colorado Springs Christian School on Thursday.

James Irwin, a state quarterfinalist last season, finishes the season 14-3.
