Seven years ago, now-2005 Lewis-Palmer graduate Laine Hubbard wasn’t too sure she wanted to keep playing soccer.

Her father and biggest fan, Rick, had died of heart disease, forcing her to question what she really wanted.

“I kind of lost interest in soccer for awhile,” she said. “I came to a point where I realized that my dad really wanted me to succeed in soccer, but he would have wanted me to be happy either way. Even though I know it would have been OK with him if I quit, soccer really makes me happy.”

Hubbard said she thought a lot of her father before her games for the University of Wyoming, where she has a cheering section. Her mom and grandmother made the drive from Monument to Laramie, Wyo., where she cracked the starting lineup as a freshman.

“It really means a lot to have them come up,” Hubbard said. “Sometimes they will just drive up to see the game and drive down the same day.”

The senior was one of the leading defensive forces all four years for the Cowgirls. She was named the Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Week for Oct. 6, an honor that surprised her.

“We play with such high-caliber teams like Utah and BYU, and the smaller teams can be overlooked,” she said.

In addition to leading the Cowgirls (9-5-1) to shutout wins over Boise State and Air Force, Hubbard kicked the game-winner against the Falcons.

The psychology major will graduate next December.

Garrett Cichowitz, Palmer ’07

Cichowitz led Grove City College (Penn.) to its 18th consecutive Presidents’ Athletic Conference title on Nov. 1. He has school records in the 8K (25 minutes, 36 seconds ) in cross country and in the 8,000 meters (25:42) in track.He was named Runner of the Week in the President’s Athletic Conference for Sept. 1, Sept. 15 and Oct. 22.

Adam Husk, Mitchell ’05

The starting defensive lineman at Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Mont., finished the season with 21 tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery.

Julia Saenz, St. Mary’s ’08

Saenz made an immediate impact as a freshman for the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs soccer team. The sports medicine major scored twice for the Mountain Lions.
