BOYS’ LACROSSE: Grandview star knocks out Kadets

Air Academy knew going into Saturday night’s state boys’ lacrosse playoff game that Grandview’s Isaac Bock possessed the potential to be a game breaker.The sophomore proved it during a critical 2½-minute span early in the third quarter, scoring three consecutive goals to lead the No. 18 seed Wolves to an 11-10 victory over No. 15 seed Kadets in the rain and cold.Bock broke a 4-4 halftime deadlock with a goal at 11:02 of the third quarter and gave Grandview a 7-4 lead at 8:42.He scored twice in the second period, the latter knotting the score at 4-4.”We did our homework,”  Air Academy coach Mark Shriver said. “We knew they had some good outside shooters. We knew he was easily their best shooter.”Bock came into the contest with 51 goals and added five in the win.Grandview held a 10-7 advantage with 3:27 to play in the game, but goals by Chris Price and Fred Waddle in a 20-second span closed the gap to 10-9 with 2:29 to play. The Wolves’ added an insurance  goal with 1:16 to play.Air Academy’s Jordan Duffey scored with 10 seconds to play to put the pressure on the Aurora-based Wolves, but the Kadets couldn’t get a final shot off at the buzzer.”We came in really fired up,”  Kadet attacker Shane Malmquist said. “We couldn’t settle our offense down.”Malmquist and Waddle, seniors who shared the team regular-season lead in goals with 20 apiece, scored four and three, respectively.Chris Price contributed a goal and assist while Danny Mitchell had a goal and Kellen Miller  three assists for Air Academy (9-6), which won the inaugural Pikes Peak Conference championship.The new league gave Colorado Springs area boys’ teams a chance to win a league title in a sport dominated by Denver area teams.”Overall, it was probably my favorite team that I enjoyed playing with,” Malmquist said.
