Avalanche vs. Wild | 3 keys to Colorado closing out the series at Ball Arena
For the first time since 2008, the Colorado Avalanche will look to close out a playoff series at home Wednesday. The last time they were able to do so also happened to be against the Minnesota Wild.
Here are three keys to Colorado finishing this series off in Game 5.
Stay disciplined
The Avalanche were easily the more dominant team at 5-on-5 in Game 4, but when they started to take some penalties in the second period, it allowed the Wild to regain some momentum. Half of the goals that the Wild scored on a Colorado goaltender during the two games in Minnesota came while on the man advantage. Josh Manson’s butt-ending incident in the first period killed the momentum the Avalanche had built at the beginning of the game and it took them a bit to regain that.
At 5-on-5, the Avalanche have shown they’re the superior team. They just have to keep the game at 5-on-5 as much as possible.
Hit Quinn Hughes
No, the ice time for Quinn Hughes in Game 4 was not a typo. The star defenseman played 34:13 out of the 60 minutes Monday night. That’s an absurdly high amount of ice time for any player in a game that didn’t go to overtime. It doesn’t really look like Hughes ever actually gets tired, but if he’s going to play crazy minutes again, the Avalanche have to make sure they’re hard minutes.
Hughes has shown that, like most defensemen his size, he doesn’t necessarily want to be hit. Even Martin Necas was having success against him on the forecheck by playing physical, and no one would ever mistake Necas for someone like Parker Kelly. He’s playing a lot of minutes, so the Avalanche just have to keep making it difficult for him.
Do what you’ve been doing
Whatever the Avalanche were doing in Game 4 was working. Coach Jared Bednar liked their details in Game 3, but he didn’t love the compete level. On Monday night, both came together and the Avalanche walked away with a well-earned win. If the Avalanche do that again, they should be able to close out this series.
