Body of turkey hunter, missing more than a week, found in Chaffee County
Searchers have recovered the body of a Salida man who had been missing for more than a week, according to the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office.
Kaden Sites, 27, was found by volunteer searchers in the wilderness near Tabeguache Creek, about 1.5 miles from where his truck was found on April 15, the last day he was seen alive. His body was recovered by the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office, Chaffee County Search and Rescue and the Chaffee County Coroner’s Office, officials said.
“Chaffee County has lost a wonderful member of our community which has left a void in our hearts,” Chaffee County Sheriff Andy Rohrich said in a statement. “There was always a measure of hope that Kaden would be found alive. We are thankful the family will have some level of closure.”
Sites reportedly went turkey hunting, alone, on April 15 at about 1:30 p.m. When he didn’t show up for a doctor’s appointment that was scheduled for that afternoon, his family found his truck near Blanks Cabin Trailhead on Shavano Mountain.
An extensive search followed, with volunteers and search and rescue crews from more than a dozen agencies, combing the area searching for Sites. According to a post from the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office, more than 6,000 man/woman hours were spent searching for Sites since he went missing.
“Thank you to everyone who joined in the efforts to bring Kaden home,” Rohrich said. “It is such a loving community we have.”
A cause of death for Sites has not yet been released, but foul play is not suspected, the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office said.
