Alleged drug deal led police to stop man before trading fire, killing him, body cam shows
Limited body-camera footage released Friday from a fatal officer-involved shooting on April 4 revealed that at least one of the three Colorado Springs police officers on the scene questioned whether or not the victim fired his gun.
The three officers tried to stop a man, Benjamin Greenfield, 40, for an alleged drug deal inside a truck before he allegedly shot once in their direction, prompting them to fire approximately 40 times at him in less than 10 seconds.
An El Paso County deputy who joined the Colorado Springs Police Department for proactive patrolling did not return fire.
A press release distributed by Colorado Springs police on Friday lists the three officers who opened fire as Dan White, Mitchell Mueller and Michael Dauchy, but it does not identify who they are in the bodycam footage.
Less than a month earlier, Greenfield allegedly attempted to escape the FBI and CSPD by setting multiple fires to the home he was in as a search warrant was being executed, according to previous Gazette reporting. He did not have an open criminal case at the time of his attempted escape, and it is unclear what the agents and officers were searching for.
Once officers made themselves known to Greenfield on the day of his death, he attempted to drive away, but the truck’s tires were lifted off the ground once it became stuck on a curb, the bodycam footage shows.
The vehicle’s other passenger exited and led police on a short foot chase before she was arrested.
At least one officer can be seen on bodycam footage throwing rocks through the windows of the truck to allow for a pepperball to be deployed. He missed at least twice and instead created visible marks on the door of the vehicle, voicing displeasure at his aim with an expletive.
Shortly after, “Officer Two” asks if a noise he heard was a gunshot, to which “Officer One” then says, “He’s shooting,” and all three open fire. It is unclear in the limited body camera footage, which was only from Officer One’s perspective, why the sheriff’s deputy did not return fire.

The released footage stops after officers opened fire, although police said afterward that officers removed Greenfield from the truck and began rendering medical aid. He later succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital.
Police said they recovered a Smith and Wesson SD 40 Pistol, “suspected illegal narcotics” and a “large amount” of cash.
Under Colorado law, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the use of force by the three officers. The 4th Judicial District Attorney’s Office will determine whether any of their actions were unlawful.
Mueller and White have been officers in the Gold Hill Division for “nearly” four and five years, respectively. Dauchy has been with CSPD for four years and is assigned to the Sand Creek Division.
