Pine Creek notches its best finish in 5A state meet

FORT COLLINS • Sickness hurt Cheyenne Mountain, but Pine Creek enjoyed a record finish.

In Class 4A, the Indians finished third. Junior Kali Maxell was sixth while classmate Dani Grossman, who was suffering from flu symptoms, finished 16th.

Cheyenne Mountain coach Karen Scott praised Maxwell and said Grossman “could be a state champion if she chooses to run year-round.”

Pine Creek was third in 5A as freshman sensation Heather Bates finished sixth, three spots ahead of Liberty sophomore Hannah Everson.

“The highest we ever finished was 12th,” said Pine Creek coach Max Oliver, whose team was 17th a year ago. “You can call this a dream season. It’s just unbelievable.”

Senior Ruth-Ann Hadjis keyed Pine Creek’s surge by taking 14th.

Palmer was sixth, led by freshman Ali Groninger in 27th.

Fountain Valley took third in 2A, led by juniors Ayla Wayman and Sam Olivera, who were 14th and 15th. Vanguard was fourth, paced by senior Chelsea Kilgore’s seventh-place showing.
