An Austin, Texas-based construction company will build a hangar for Fort Carson’s new combat aviation brigade, the latest of several new construction projects for the post.

Hensel Phelps Construction Co. was awarded the$44.8 million contract, which calls for the aviation support battalion hangar to be finished by February 2014, the Defense Department said Tuesday.

Fort Carson officials had planned to spend $63 million on the project, according to the post’s planning documents.

It is one of several contracts awarded this year for the 2,700-soldier brigade — all but one of which were awarded for less than the amount Congress approved, said Vincent Turner, chief of military programs for the Omaha district of the Army Corps of Engineers.

Army officials also awarded Hensel Phelps a $10.9 million contract to build a control tower, Turner said.

Lloyd Contracting Co., of Titusville, Fla., was awarded $18.2 million for a roads and utilities project, which will cost $6.6 million more than originally projected.

Two Colorado Springs-based companies were chosen for three other projects.

Crews broke ground in June on a $9.9 million headquarters building near Butts Army Airfield, which is being built by Komada LLC. The same company will make $3.8 million in adjustments to Titus Road and Butts Boulevard.

Army officials awarded$3.2 million to Hartland/Mass Joint Venture LLC, of Colorado Springs, for a land-vehicle-fueling facility.

Contracts for one more infrastructure project, as well as two barracks, have yet to be awarded. Congress cleared $124.2 million for the three projects.
