Someone’s been calling around asking for money pretending to be a police officer, and Colorado Springs police are warning residents not to buy it.

Numerous concerned citizens called police Wednesday to say a man and a woman have been claiming to be “the lead investigator” from the Falcon Division of the Police Department, saying the call recipient’s family member “was in trouble and that the citizen needed to send the suspect money,” police wrote in a news release issued Wednesday night.

“The Colorado Springs Police Department would like to remind citizens that an employee of the police department will NEVER call a citizen and demand money,” the news release said.

Recipients of the calls have been told their family members were in trouble for unpaid traffic tickets, warrants or tax evasion, police said. The phone calls appeared to be coming from the number 444-7240, which is the number for the Falcon substation, but the callers refused to release their names or information.

Anyone contacted by someone claiming to be from CSPD should contact police to confirm their identity. Anyone with information about the scammers can call police at 444-7000.
