Izetta is a Colorado resident who has been graciously taking care of her two grandchildren while juggling two jobs to pay the bills.

Last year, she noticed her vision had deteriorated substantially and she was unable to perform many tasks she was able to previously. She didn’t realize it yet, but Izetta had developed cataracts in both eyes, and they had progressed to the point where her vision couldn’t be fixed with anything but surgery.

Since she worked two jobs to feed her family, this also meant her annual income put her just above the limit to qualify for Medicaid. She made too much, and yet, made too little to afford surgery. If she couldn’t afford surgery, what would happen to her grandchildren when she couldn’t see to do her work anymore? She felt stuck, unsure what would become of her family.

Then, Izetta heard about EverythingForSight.org, a nonprofit founded by local ophthalmologist James Barad, MD, to fund eye care for those who need it most. In 2013, the organization partnered with Pinnacle Eye Center, where the majority of EverythingForSight.org-sponsored medical and surgical care is performed. With the help of generous volunteers, EverythingForSight.org has been able to preserve and restore vision to thousands of patients.

After the EverythingForSight.org team members presented her with options for treating her cataracts, Izetta was hopeful for her future. After hearing her story and ascertaining her income, they took the necessary steps to request a small investment toward her care. EverythingForSight.org covered the direct cost of surgery for not just one of Izetta’s eyes, but both.

Izetta was overcome with gratitude, thankful someone cared about her so much. She underwent her second cataract surgery in July is now able to not only continue caring for her grandchildren, but to see and enjoy life in a way she has not been able to for a long time.
