Sex, death and motherhood.
Those are the topics du jour in Kristina Hall’s one-woman show, “Some Things Can’t Be Whispered.” She’ll perform Saturday at The Modbo.
“I wrote a show that’s funny and irreverent and reflective about this particular transition I’m going through,” she says, “and that everybody goes through at some point in life.”
Hall, a former Colorado Springs resident, now lives in the Denver area where she performs, writes and coaches people in the fine art of being funny. She’s appeared on nationally televised comedy shows on PBS, the Comedy Channel, Fox and Showtime.
Death of a parent. Re-entering the dating world. Watching a child embark upon his own life.
“It’s storytelling and stand-up,” Hall says about her show. “It’s not just exclusive to mothers or single women. It’s about developing the art of letting go.”
Looking back now, Hall can see her decision to begin a new writing project focused on online dating was a way to stave off the grief of her mother dying.
“This whole last two years has been a giant research project,” she says. “(Grief) is not something that is just done – it’s learning how to be with it as it comes up and learning how to let go. And not just of the people you are grieving but who you were to them – that identity.”
Hall made her first foray into stand-up after a 1986 audition at the Fine Arts Center. The director and producer promised her a callback if she did one thing – five minutes of stand-up during an open mike at Jeff Valdez Comedy Corner.
Fully expecting to bomb, she was surprised by the outcome.
“I thought I’d have a great story to tell but it actually went really well,” she says. “Had it not gone well I wouldn’t have had the stamina to keep doing it. I didn’t think it was my dream. It was a gift that it went well.”
