Forward Aaron King is one of several veterans Colorado Springs coach Steve Trittschuh hopes will elevate their play over the final weeks of the United Soccer League season.

“King is a veteran and we need more out of him,” Trittschuh said. “He’s not the only one. Luke (Vercollone), Devala (Gorrick) and a number of guys need to play better. We need everyone to step up at this point.”

Vercollone certainly did with a goal and assist in Saturday’s 3-0 home win over LA Galaxy II while Mike Seth scored twice.

“Mike obviously did,” Trittschuh said. “The guys executed our game plan and took advantage.”

Trittschuh credited King for being a positive influence in his new role as a reserve and he has proved capable of stepping up, citing his performance in a 2-0 home win over Oklahoma City.

“But I need more,” he said. “He needs to be more consistent down the stretch for us.”

Cheyenne Mountain grad McCarthy part owner of Arizona United

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher, Phoenix resident and Cheyenne Mountain High School graduate Brandon McCarthy is one of seven making up the new ownership group for Arizona United.

The local investors are led by Berke Bakay, the CEO of Kona Grill. With the announcement, the new owners appointed David Farca as club president. Frank Yallop remains as coach and head of soccer operations.

“We couldn’t be more excited at the opportunity we have with Arizona United by bringing together a who’s who of business leaders in the Phoenix area,” Bakay said in a news release. “Soccer has always been in my blood. My interest and involvement in the soccer world has been positively influenced by one of my uncles serving as the vice chairman of the famed Galatasaray club in Istanbul.”

The sale was announced Wednesday.
