The public is invited to a meeting Thursday about the Waldo Canyon fire burn scar recovery efforts and information on how officials respond to flash floods, Colorado Springs city officials said.

The meeting will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Chipeta Elementary School, 2340 Ramsgate Terrace.

The meeting includes:

– A breakdown of recovery and mitigation efforts on the burn scar.

– A look into weather forecasting, potential flood impact areas and methods for flash flood warning.

– A presentation by the Colorado Springs Fire Department’s Swift Water Rescue Team on disaster preparedness.

“As we near the fifth anniversary of the Waldo Canyon Fire, the burn scar continues to recover,” Gordon Brenner, the city’s recovery coordinator, said in a statement. “However, the threat of flash flooding in certain areas of western Colorado Springs still exists. Many flood mitigation efforts have taken place since the Waldo Canyon fire in 2012 to reduce the impact of flash flooding, but residents must remain vigilant during heavy rain events and especially during the monsoon season, which runs from May through September.”
