Melissa Marie, Bruce Alan and Debra Lynn Bennett Status: Homicides Incident Date: January 16, 1984 Bruce, 27, wife Debra, 26, and Melissa, 7, were brutally murdered inside their home between January 15 and 16. All three died of blunt force trauma, and Bruce and Melissa suffered from sharp force injuries consistent with a knife. Evidence at the scene indicated that Melissa had also been sexually assaulted. Burt Status: Homicide Incident Date: February 26, 1970 On February 26, 1970 after a basketball game at Goddard Middle School, Burt began walking towards her house in Columbine Valley. Witnesses saw Burt walk through Berry Dr., Bowles Ave and Middlefield Road, but she never made it home. Burt was last seen talking to someone in a vehicle stopped on South Middlefield Road. A Jefferson County road crew found Burt’s nude body in Deer Creek Canyon, and it was determined that she had been strangled and raped. She was last seen wearing white jogging shorts, a blue t-shirt and white running shoes. No physical evidence or remains have been found to date. Read more about the case at colorado.gov.Edward Dylan Bryant and Austin Eugene Bryant Status: Missing Incident Date: January 1, 2001 Edward, 8, and Austin, 4, were last seen in Monument. They were both adopted in the 1990s and were considered special-needs children. In early 2011, an adoptive brother and two other foster children revealed that Austin had been beaten, denied food several times a week, locked in the garage several times a day as well as enduring other abusive behaviors from his foster parents. The two children may have gone by alias names Dylan Levy Bennett and Austen Jean Bennett. Read more about the case at colorado.gov.Roger Dean Status: Homicide Incident Date: November 21, 1985 Dean was from Littleton, Colorado, and was forced via gunpoint by a masked man to tie up his wife. Dean tried to flee the house to look for help and was shot and killed. The events leading up to the murder included a $30,000 withdrawal by Dean put into a secret account, evidence planted to deceive cops and sightings of Dean hours before his murder. It is still unknown who shot Dean, but is speculated that extortion letters delivered to his widow years after his murder were written by both a man and a woman. No suspects have ever been named, but there continues to be speculation that his widow was the killer. Groezinger was a beloved community member with no known enemies. Employees found her in the early hours of the morning deceased in the vicinity of the office portion of the hotel. The cause of death was strangulation and blunt force trauma. Kirschenman Status: Homicide Incident Date: February 17, 1991 Kirschenman’s body was found by a security guard next to the Martin Drake Power Plant near the railroad tracks. He had cuts on his wrists and significant bruising to his face and body. The cause of death was determined to be strangulation. The investigation revealed some items Kirschenman was wearing that evening were missing. Read more about the case at colorado.gov.Deborah Ann Heriford Status: Missing Incident Date: March 31, 2011 Heriford was last seen walking her dog near Academy Boulevard and Vickers Drive. She was reported missing by her husband after she did not show up for her job as a crossing guard. Heriford left her belongings and car at home, and her dog was found tied to a post a quarter mile from her home. Heriford was in the process of divorcing her husband and foul play is suspected. The woman said she had spoken with Honzell by phone that evening and there was no indication of a problem. The woman’s children were unharmed. She was wrapped in a sheet covered with construction plastic that was closed with duct tape. She suffered severe blunt trauma to the head. Read more about the case at westword.com.Jane and John Doe Status: Homicides Incident Date: 1982 Two bodies-one adult male and one adult female, were found washed up along the San Juan River in Archuleta County. The female body was found a few weeks before the male’s body was discovered, but authorities tied the two together. Jane Doe had been strangled to death and John Doe had been shot twice with a small caliber weapon. To this day, Jane and John have not been identified and the killer has not been apprehended. The greatest clue in the case was a weathered note found in the dead woman’s pocket. The note was eventually found to be the name and phone number of Marilyn Cobianco, a resident of Farmington, New Mexico. Cobianco could not explain how her name and phone number ended up in Jane’s pocket. The only clue found on John Doe was his t-shirt, which advertised a brothel in Nevada. A few years later when Colorado Bureau of Investigation agents went to see Jane and John Doe’s graves, they found fresh flowers on John’s resting place. No substantive evidence of the identities of the two nor who killed them and motive has ever been determined. He was never seen or heard from again. His wife Diana believes he was murdered by a former friend whose ex-wife they had just recently and secretly helped move to Colorado.
