Harrison High School lockout lifted, former student held after gun incident

Harrison High School in Colorado Springs was put on a lockout Wednesday morning after reports of a juvenile near the campus with a gun.

Harrison School District 2 released a statement saying the incident occurred outside of the school before classes started Wednesday.

A student told an administrator that a juvenile runaway outside the school showed the student a handgun inside a backpack.

“We are so proud of the reporting student,” said Christine O’Brien, a district spokeswoman. “And we are so proud of the safety mechanisms that worked like clockwork.”

In response to the threat, the school activated a lockout, preventing anyone from entering the school but allowing classes to continue.

Police said there was no threat against the school. A male juvenile – who previously attended the school – is in custody on suspicion of possession of a firearm.

“We were able to locate him about a mile away from the school,” said Lt. Howard Black, a spokesman for the Colorado Springs Police Department. “It is my understanding that he has not been attending class for some time.”

The lockdown came as students around the Pikes Peak region and the United States joined in walkouts to protest gun violence in the wake of the deadly shootings in February in Parkland, Fla.

Statement from Harrison School District 2:

Harrison High School had an incident outside of the school building before school began Wednesday morning. A student reported to an administrator that a runaway youth appeared in front of the school and showed the student a weapon inside of a backpack.

The administrator immediately put the school into lockout, and the youth was apprehended offcampus by the School Resource Officer and District Security, along with the assistance of CSPD. The backpack containing the weapon also was found.

All students and staff are safe inside the school and the campus is operating normally inside the locked building. We applaud the student for reporting the incident to an administrator immediately. The District cannot comment further on this matter as it is an open CSPD investigation, and all inquiries should be directed to CSPD.
