Colorado Springs City Council to vote on two ‘significant’ utility rate decreases

The Colorado Springs Utilities Board unanimously approved advancing rate decreases for electricity and gas on Wednesday.

An average customer could save $10 per month beginning with their first bill after April 1, said Scott Shirola, Utilities pricing and rates manager. The Colorado Springs City Council, whose members serve on the Utilities Board, is expected to vote on the measure Tuesday.

The bulk of those savings would come from the gas cost adjustment rate decreasing by over 38%, while the electric rate would decrease by 11%.

Shirola credits the savings to lower natural gas prices than previously forecast, unlike crude oil and gasoline. Warm temperatures across the U.S. during winter also decreased overall natural gas consumption.

“Typically, this time of year in the spring is when we come out of heating season, so that is typical for there to be lower prices this time of year,” Shirola told The Gazette before the meeting. “But prices are lower right now than even we saw last year, so we’re seeing a general pattern of just lower cost.”

He anticipates those “significant” rate decreases will be maintained for the next 12 months, but costs will still be evaluated quarterly.

A 12% increase was also forwarded to the City Council for the green power service rate, a voluntary program allowing customers to designate all of their electricity use to solar energy, according to Utilities’ website.
