Fort Carson families plan to hold Run for the Fallen

The families of Fort Carson plan to honor soldiers killed at war with an annual run though Iron Horse Park.

The Run for the Fallen will take place Saturday, featuring a five-kilometer run and a one-kilometer walk through the park. Check-in for the event begins at 8 a.m., with opening ceremonies at 8:30 a.m. and the run beginning at 9 a.m. The walk begins at 9:10 a.m.

Since 2003, 78 Fort Carson soldiers have died in Afghanistan and 258 have died in Iraq.

Most recently, the 4th Brigade Combat Team’s top enlisted soldier, Command Sgt. Maj. Kevin J. Griffin, died when two suicide bombers attacked his unit before a meeting of high-level officials and tribal leaders, The Associated Press reported.

Also killed in the attack were Maj. Thomas E. Kennedy, of the 4th Brigade, and Air Force Maj. Walter D. Gray, an air liaison officer and flight commander attached to Fort Carson through the 93rd Air Ground Operations Wing at Moody Air Force Base in Georgia.

Pueblo, Fort Carson sign covenant on cooperation

The leaders of Pueblo and Fort Carson signed a covenant Tuesday aimed at fostering more cooperation between the city and the installation.

The signing marks the latest in a series of covenants between post officials and leaders of surrounding communities, Fort Carson officials said. Covenants were signed with the leaders of Colorado Springs in May and Pueblo West in 2011, the post said.

Ceremony held to honor slain substitute teacher

Past and present students of Stetson Elementary School gathered Monday to honor a former substitute teacher who was killed in 2011 during a mass shooting at an airport in Afghanistan.

A ceremony was held to dedicate a new electronic scoreboard in the elementary school’s gym that honors Maj. Phil Ambard, who was among eight airmen and a civilian contractor killed during the shooting April 27, 2011.

Ambard, a professor at the Air Force Academy, was often a substitute teacher at the elementary school, where his wife taught physical education.

The scoreboard was bought with money raised by the elementary school’s parent-teacher association, according to Falcon School District 49.
