More than Dixon: 3 other great hikes at Cheyenne Mountain State Park

Dixon Trail might be the quintessential trail at Cheyenne Mountain State Park. It is, after all, the trail up Cheyenne Mountain. But the long and hard journey ー more than 15 miles round trip ー is not for everyone.

Consider these other three trails, quintessential in their own way.

Also, consider calling ahead for trail conditions, which can be muddy this time of year: 719-576-2016

Blackmer: Blackmer showcases the state park’s “transition zone,” where shrubland gives way to the montane forest. The shrubland preserves rusted farm equipment recalling former ranching days here, and then the trail climbs into higher pines that break for views of Cheyenne Mountain and the plains. ~3 ½ miles

Sundance: Blackmer tours the forest while Sundance features, well, more sun and open air. We like to do the loop clockwise, starting south as the trail somewhat parallels Colorado 115. But soon Sundance veers west, into the quiet core of the colorful mosaic overlooked by the mesmerizing mountain. ~3 ½ miles

Talon/North Talon: Talon Trail runs through the park’s front meadow and ventures to the park’s back wilds. Talon is the long, beautiful “stem” meeting North Talon, a short loop forming a “lollipop.” North Talon skirts a rugged hogback with prime views of Cheyenne Mountain. ~7 miles
