Suspect wounded in officer-involved shooting in downtown Colorado Springs early Sunday

Colorado Springs police investigate alleged break-in, shots fired

One suspect has been hospitalized with serious injuries and a police officer is on administrative leave following a police shooting in downtown Colorado Springs early Sunday, according to law enforcement officials.

At about 12:45 a.m., patrol officers saw a disturbance near a business on South Nevada Avenue, just north of East Colorado Avenue, police said. As they approached the business, they saw a man holding a gun. When the man saw the officers, he fled.

As officers chased the suspect north on Nevada toward Pikes Peak Avenue, they ordered him to drop the gun. The man kept running, ignoring commands. During the chase, “at least one CSPD officer fired at least one round, striking the suspect,” police said.

The wounded man continued to run but was caught in the 100 block of East Pikes Peak Avenue, officials said. Officers rendered aid to the suspect until medical personnel arrived and took him to a nearby hospital. A firearm was recovered at the scene, police said.

The suspect, whose injuries were listed as “serious,” was not named.

No other injuries were reported. As per department policy, one CSPD officer has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.

CSPD will release body-worn camera footage of the incident within 21 days, officials said.
