A woman faces misdemeanor charges after five malnourished horses were recently seized by the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office and other agencies, according to a news release Friday.

Three of the horses found Sept. 12 on property leased by Mindy Gonzales were in extremely poor condition and required urgent care, the Sheriff’s Office said. No food was found on the property on Alta Vista Road near Ramah in eastern El Paso County, though there was a water source.

Gonzales, 49, was cited and faces five counts of animal cruelty charges.

The horses were transferred to a local rescue facility and treated for malnutrition and other health conditions, the release stated.

“I am grateful to the concerned citizen who reported the poor living conditions for these horses,” said El Paso County Sheriff Joseph Roybal. “If you own animals, as a pet, working partner or stock, you are responsible for providing and caring for them.”
