Colorado Springs police say a man is facing charges for allegedly causing a fatal three-way crash in June.

Shawn Johnston, 40, was arrested last month and is now facing two counts of vehicular homicide, DUI and other traffic charges for a June 16 crash at South Powers and East Fountain boulevards that killed two people and put another in the hospital, the Police Department said.

According to police, Johnston ran a red light, striking a second vehicle and causing that vehicle to strike a third one, which rolled onto its passenger side.

Drivers Olga Gauvala, 72, and Emily Hoffman, 51, were declared dead at the scene.

These are the 28th and 29th traffic fatalities in Colorado Springs this year. There were 22 at the same time last year. In the past 365 days, there have been 57.

Johnston is scheduled for his first appearance at the 4th District Judicial Court on July 18 at 3:45 p.m.
