El Paso County Coroner’s Office releases ID in recent jail death
The El Paso County Coroner’s Office has released the ID of the inmate who died days after being found unresponsive in his cell on Sept. 11.
Zacharia Joseph Spriggs, 33, of Colorado Springs was hospitalized after being found unresponsive during a routine welfare check at the El Paso County Jail. Evidence found in the man’s cell suggested that he had attempted suicide, officials said.
Spriggs died four days after he was found, according to a press release sent out Sept. 15 by the Sheriff’s Office.
“Despite efforts and the highest level of care by medical professionals at the hospital, the individual passed away at approximately 5:35 p.m. today,” the news release stated.
The Gazette has requested the autopsy report from the El Paso County Coroner regarding the cause of death.
