Liz Barnez loves to perform Joni Mitchell’s “Amelia.”

Singing the 6-minute classic, inspired by aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart, feels like meditation to Barnez. The repetitive nature of the song, which holds seven verses, is almost spiritual to the singer.

“I’m not a religious person, but it feels like a prayer, just singing it,” Barnez said.

Barnez will join Rebecca Folsom and Celeste Krenz on Friday to perform their Joni Mitchell Tribute Show at Stargazers Theatre. The show will feature a range of Mitchell’s music, with the vocalists accompanied by locally renowned musicians Eric Moon on keys, Steve Ivey on drums, Eric Thorin on bass and Eric Straumanis on guitar.

“It’s a playful and sincere celebration of Joni Mitchell songs, and her as an artist, too,” Barnez said. “The three of us just respect her so much for artistry.”

The trio previously performed together as songwriter group Faces of Eve, but have since settled into their own renditions of Mitchell.

“We’re all great friends, and we’ve known each other and we’ve written songs together, and we each have really distinct vocal styles,” Barnez said. “Joni’s voice over the years and her style has changed so much, and I thought, ‘Oh my God, this is so perfect because we can all represent different parts of Joni’s vocal quality, but inflicting our own styles onto Joni’s songs.”

A hero of hers since childhood, Barnez fondly remembers the music of Mitchell echoing from the walls of her sister’s room growing up. She revered Mitchell so much so that she was hesitant to perform the artist’s music.

“I never felt that I would attempt to learn a Joni song because it always seems sort of like sacred ground, like no one should ever cover the songs because of the respect for her artistry and for her singularity as an artist,” Barnez said.

But, after some persuasion from friend Moon, who will be playing the piano at the concert, she took the leap.

Now, she looks forward to sharing the sound of Mitchell with all.

“We’re hoping that it’s just a way that we can all connect in this crazy world — maybe we can connect through some music and sing together and maybe that’ll bring some joy in everybody’s lives,” Barnez said.
